JEWS IN THE MILYHONOR JEWISH WAR DEADDetroit, Aug. 28 (WN.S)—A cam-ipaign to erect the first monument in the United States to American Jewish soldiers who laid down their lives in the wars of. the republic will be launched at the 43d national encampment of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States to be held at Detroit, September 2 to 5, according to an announcement by Samuel J. Leve, general convention chairman.The .proposed monument is to be erected at Gettysburg, Pa., on the site of the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was selected, Mr. Leve said, because 1,335 Jews fought there in the greatest battle of the Civil War.Daniel Harris, 93-year-old New Yorker, who is the last surviving: Jewish veteran of the Civil War and who represented the Jewish War Veterans at last month’s celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Battle 1 Af Gettysburg, will be accorded the honor of moving the adoption of the resolution calling for the erection of the monument.Mr. Leve made public figures compiled by the historian-general of the Jewish War Veterans showing that there were 929 Jews in Union regiments at Gettysburg and 406 Jews in Confederate regiments.Fifty Jews were killed and 35 wounded on both sides at Gettysburg. Of the Jewish dead, 34 wore the blue of the North and 16 wore the gray of the South. Jewish wounded among the Union casualties numbered 20 and 15 among the Confederate casualties.
