Rust Chosen As First Post CommanderOn Sunday, August 21, 1932, a group of ex-service men, who had seen foreign service, met at the Cullman County Court House and organized a post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. In order'to become a member of this organization it is necessary that the applicant have foreign service and the membership is not confined to veterans of the World War. It takes in veterans of all foreign wars, which includes the War with Spain, Cuba, the Philippine Insurrection and Boxer Rebellion as well as other wars.Twenty-four men entered their names as charter members. Dr. Howard F. Paddock, of Crane Hill, and James H. Mitcham; of . Cullman, Ala., who are Spanish-American War Veterans and who served in the Philippine Islands during the Philippine Insurrection, were the first to fill out application blanks to organize this post.The following are the names of those men who joined hands with the Spanish-American Was Veterans:James A. Russ, W. Marvin Scott, James G. Nix, Theodore Whitaker, Eldredge Thomas, Walter Z. Maner, Ottis Livingston, Alfred E. Cortes, Arthur J. Livingston, Adolph Rau, j Forest Yearwood, Melvin Liyingston, Howard F. Paddock, Rufus L. Harbi-son, James H. Mitcham, Milton P. Kohlenberg, William B. Burrow, Joel McLeroy, T. G. Stapler, John T. Hill,! J. G. Schiehl, Joseph L. Harris,:Robert H. Bell, W. B. Lovelless. - jAfter the applications had been signed by the above-named parties James A. Russ was elected commander of the post and Lamar Harris was j elected vice-commander and W. Marvin Scott was elected junior vice-commander. Dr. Howard F. Paddock was elected adjutant, James H. Mitchem was elected quartermaster and E. G. Thomas was elected officer of the day while Forrest Yearwood was elected officer of the guard. iThe meeting then adjourned to meet again on the fourth Sunday in Sep-{ tember at 2 o’clock p. m., at which; time other officers will be elected and the post charter granted and recorded;! in the office of the Judge of Probate.1All ex-service men who have foreign' service to their credit are invited to' join this organization. One of thej main features of the organization is that it was founded in 1899 and is the oldest ex-service man’s organization in, the United States. It is the only vet-J1 eran’s organization maintaining . a National Home for widows and orphans. It “honors the dead by help-1 ing the living.” It will not tolerate abuses by politically ambitious indi-: viduals. It is composed of ordinai-y men with extraordinary service. jThe above are just a few of tlW things of this organization.
