William Gibson, 20, awarded the silver star for leading his squad in the capture of a German tow’ll last April 10 and rescuing hi* commander after killing two Nazis and routing others. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Gibson 12 E. 113th.The silver star for gallantry in action has been presented to Sgt. William Gibson, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James Gibson. 12 E. 113th, former local basketballstar, his parents have learned.Gibson, serving with the 394th regiment. 99th division, earned the high decoration last April 10 in Germany. His citation, in part, follows:“Sgt. Gibson took command of his squad and led it successfully in the capture of a strategic town. During the course of evacuation of his wounded squad leader, he and a comrade encountered stiff enemy opposition which resulted in a sharp fight.Kills Two. Routes Others“His comrade was killed, but Sgt. Gibson routed the enemy, killing two and driving the rest to cover. He then brought up reinforcements and successfully completed the evacuation of his squad leader. His gallantry, and display of outstanding courage under fire reflects the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces.”Sgt. Gibson was graduated in January, 1943, from Fenger High .school, where he was a star basketball player. He also played on Y.M.CA. and Roseland Presbyterian church cage teams. Following his graduation he worked in the drafting department of the Calumet shops until he entered the, army in May. 1943. Overseas for two years, he is scheduled to sail for home in December. His brother, Sgt. John Gibson, has received a discharge after three years of service, part of whioh was in Africa and Italy.A____
