When we got to our objective they were still on the retreat. New reliefs then took our places and J guess they are still running. This was the first big battle I have ever been in. It was a big and victorious one. We pushed them with tanks, cavalry, artillery, Aeroplanes, Infantry and everything imaginable. Our artillery made so much noise that it was just a constant roar. We finally got into a dense smoke, so dense that I couldn’t see the man beside me. Some of us who were carrying some signal supplies got lost and got into the German aifillery fire and we sure had pome close escapes. We got a German out of a dug out and took h:m prisoner. He seemed like a good fellow. He said that Germany only issued her soldiers two cigarettes a day. We also picked up a wounded boy, bandaged his arm and then made the German prisoner carry him. Our side took a great number of prisoners I have not heard Ike exact number yet Four Germans captured one of our corporals and some other men and started down the trench with them. They had not gone very far until they met the majorand a lieutenant.
