Jfc had read those liory appeals made in congress by senators from Nebraska and Vermont, lie was well acouainted with the blowing up of our battleship Maine, and his heart was filled to fullness, as was the heart of every patriotic American citizen And thus when the call came from the President, asking for troops to go forth and .defend our country from the insult which had oecn heaped upon it, and to devote their lives in behalf of the liberties of an oppressed people, Elbert Patterson undcistcod the situation and had as full and complete understanding of the mission of his service as any member who went out in Co. H.
