JOHN PATE HAS BEEN REPORTED DEAD BY NAVYJohn Pate, son of Mrs. Cora Pate, South Rawlings Street, has been reported killed in action, according to a letter received by his mother from the Navy Secretary, Frank Knox.He is reported to have lost his life last October 15 when the destroyer, Meridith, was sunk in the South Pacific. Curtis “Sixty” Etherton was on the same boat as Pate when it was sunk. However, “Sixty” escaped and spent a long furlough here with his parents, jSecretary Knox expressed his sympathy to Mrs. Pate in his letter and stated that “her son had lost his life in the performance of his duty and in the service of his country.”The Free Press carried a noticeof his being missing in action several months ago.
