KevoiuuonaiyWar soldier Jonathan GossJonathan Goss, the Revolutionary Soldier, was the son of Jonathan and was born March 13, 1760 in Townsend, Middlesex County, Mass.While residing in Townsend, Mass., he enlisted in October or November, 1776, served as a substitute for his father, as a private in Captain Jabez Holden’s Company, Colonel Thatcher’s Massachusetts Regiment, was in an engagement at Strawberry Hill March 17, 1777. and was discharged on that day.Soon after the expiration of this service, he again enlisted, served as a private in Captain John Minot’s Company, Colonel Whitney’s Massachusetts Regiment, marched to Rhode Island, was engaged in guarding the coast, length of service two months.He moved to Chester, Windsor County, Vt., enlisted there in October 1779 or 1780, served as'a private in Captain Saf-ford’s Vermont Company, went on an expedition to the head waters of the Lamoille River against the Indians, served two months and 15 days.After the Revolution, he continued to reside in Vermont for six or seven years, then moved to Whitestown, Oneida County, New York, wherehe resided tor 12 years;thence to Steubenville,Jefferson County, Ohio, resided there eight years; then subsequently resided in other parts of the state of Ohio for about four years, before moving to Vanderburgh County,Ind., where he resided eight years; thence to Edwards County, 111. He resided there about three years before locating in Wabash County, 111.He was allowed a pension on his application executed Sept. 13, 1832, while residing near Friendsville in Wabash County, 111., which he continued to receive through September 1844. He died sometime after that September and before the following March.A Government Marker bearing his name and military service was laterplaced in the FriendsvilleCemetery.His mother’s name was possibly Mary X, his wife’s name is unknown, sons’ names unknown, but he had at least one daughter by the name of Calista who married John Martin of Edwards County through whom some of his present day Wabash County lineage continues through the names ol Martin, Brown. Phebus, Compton, McPherson, Hall and Anderson.
