DAR Chapter conducts dedication service for Revolutionary War soldiersThe Mt. Carmel Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution held a dedication of three Revolutionary War soldiers buried in the Friendsville Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 14.Due to extremely blustery weather conditions and the threat of rain, the ceremony was moved indoors in the Pentecostal Faith Assembly Church.The processional into the church was led by a Color Guard from the Long Knives Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in Southern Illinois, to the accompaniment of the drummer of the Kyilindi Bagpiper Corps.The Invocation was given by the Rev. Doris Chapman Becker-man, a Mt. Carmel Chapter member. District VII Director Sue Ellen Leikauf Wallace from Creal Springs led the Pledge of Allegiance. Illinois State Librarian Mary Thornburgh Haines from DuQuoin led the American’s Creed. The national anthem was led by Betty Hartley Ford, Honorary State Regent from Lebanon, accompanied by Marcia Woodcock on keyboard.Mt. Carmel Chapter Regent Donna Willis Sigler welcomed the over 80 people present. Illinois State Treasurer Judith Anderson Mearns read greetings from Illinois State Regent Candace Fryburger, who was unable to attend.Goss descendantsBill Phebus and Connie McPherson stand at the grave site of their ancestor, Revolutionary War Soldier Jonathon Goss, in the Friendsville Cemetery Sunday, Oct. 14, following the dedication of the DAR marker noting his service in the cause of American Independence.Out-of-town guests were introduced. Many people contributed to the success of the dedication and they included: Members of the Illinois State Board of Management; Long Knives Chapter members of the Sons of the Revolution; Kyilindi Bagpipers; Mt.
