WASHINGTON — A House-Senate conference committee approved Tuesday $54.9 million in New Mexico military construction projects as part of the Department of Defense Military Construction Appropriations Bill.The bill commits $17.3 million toward construction and refurbishment projects at Holloman Air Force Base and $9.6 million for start up costs toward the Large Blast Thermal Simulator (LB/ TS) to be built at the White Sands Missile Range.The bill also appropriates $12.4 million in National Guard and Army Reserve construction which was pushed by Sen. JeffBingaman, D-N.M.The Military Construction Appropriation bill now heads for the Senate and House floors for full approval. If approved it will be sent to President Bush to sign into law.“I am pleased the conference committee continued to support the Senate’s request for these projects which are important to New Mexico, Bingaman stated in a press release. “The Guard and Reserve projects are vital to upgrading New Mexico’s reserve forces and the LB/TS project is one that is of national significance.The $73.6 million LB/TS project is designed to test the effectsof a nuclear blast on military equipment by subjecting it to shock waves that simulate theimpact of nuclear weapons.Construction of the LB/TS, to be located in the northern part of the range near the Stallion Gate, is expected to employ approximately 110 workers, with a peakemployment of up to 200 people.
