By United Press InternationalAccording to the legend, a Greek soldier in 490 B.C. ran from Marathon to Athens to bring news of his countrymen's victory in a battle of the Greco -Persian War. The soldier ran 22 miles, 1,470 yards. The distance of modern marathons varied from 24 miles, 1,500 yards at the f i rst modern Olympics in 1896 in Athens, to 26 miles, 990 yards at the 1920 Antwerp, Belgium, games. The current distance — 26 miles, 385 yards — was accepted as standard in 1924.
