lows:Battery E, 6th F. A.f A. E. F. France, Sept. 17, 1918.Dear Sister:—Yesterday I received a long looked for letter from you. It was dated July 23, so I can see I will have to beg your pardon for getting so “noisy” about your neglect to write. The letter should have reached me a month ago. Well, I was very glad to get it anyway and to learn that you are well and having good time.1 am well and having* a good time in a way and in another sense or way it is not a good time- I will be glad when it’s all over and we can leave for “Home, Sweet Home,” but there is'nt any of us, if we were to tell the truth, that would want to come home before it is finished unless we should be used to train more men or be in some other branch of service back there. Not long ago I talked with a Sergeant who has been back to the States to boost the Liberty Loan and is now returned by request to the 6th Field Artillery. He says he was treated like a prince by the people all over the States bui found a great change, especially “down around the old corner” where the boys used tp hang around. He says you ask for Bill, Mike, John or others and they are in the army, navy or some other braach of service. Some one of you said something in one of your letters about Vern Ward saying he was coming w see me. Well, he didn’t come. Such is the luck of soldiers. You can make the nicest and seemingly the most perfect plans and the next morning they are dissolved for your outfit is marching away.Sister, I am enclosing a citation which I received some time ago. As you can see it is in bad shape, so I am sending it home for you folks to take care of fore me as I will only lose it or wear it out over here. Do not get the idea that I am a hero or anything of the sort. I am just plain American and we try to do our duty under all circumstances. I don't mind telling you that my knees have been much stronger at other times than they were luring that instance., I would have sent this long ago but it was lost and just found and returned to me to-day.Hope this finds you O. K. and still having a good time. I amYour loving brother, COLWELL.
