Commissioner bmith i stated, is a contribution from the survivors of 'his famous brigade.The flag, worn and battle-scarred reposes in a new cedar chest bearing this inscription: ‘‘This case is given in memory of Robert A. Brantley, Sr., who bore this tlaginto the baptism of fire at GainesMill.First At Gaine* Mill.Commissioner Smith gives thisbrief history of the flag: This flag was made by Mrs. M. J. Young of Houston, May, 1862, and sent to the Fifth Texas by Bob Campbell, one of the first volunteers, Company A, Fifth Texas The flag saw the first service at Games Mill, June 1862. George Onder-donk, Company A, was the lirst fhvg-bearer* At the beginning ot the famous charge of Hood’s Brigade at Gaines Mill, Onderdonk was wounded and Bob Brantley it seized the flag without permitting it to touch the ground, and boreit gallantly throughout the charge.The flag was borne in 27 pitchedbattles; sometimes in defeat, sometimes in victory, from Gaines Mill to Appomattox,Official Brigade FUf.At Gettysburg, Hood designat-ed this as the official flag of his brigade. It withstood fire of shot and shell at Little Round Top.
