Hobart Isley, retired minister, and the Rev. Thomas Perkins, associate minister of Gibsonville United Methodist Church.The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. GurleyHIGH POINT — Mrs. Kathryn Thackston Gurley, 73, of 3418 Haleys Way, died Tuesday, Oct.20, 1998, at High Point Regional Hospital.Born March 8, 1925, in Crewe, Va., she was the wife for 50 years to Mr. Ralph Gurley, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Paul Venable Thackston and Mrs. Annie Dunkum Thackston, both deceased. She graduated from Duke University, where she majored in elementary education. She taught school at Johnson Street Elementary and Brentwood Elementary. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Christian Life Sunday School Class and a member of Circle No. 5.Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Kathy Edwards of Greensboro; a son, Mr. Jim Gurley of Burlington; and five grandchildren.She was preceded in death by a daughter, Miss Elizabeth “Libby” Gurley.The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. R. Scott Woodmansee and the Rev. Lisa M. Mullen. Granville Attaway Sharpe of Altamonte Springs, died Oct. 17, 1998.Born in Burlington on April 4, 1920, he was the husband of Mrs. Alice Withers Sharpe, who survives, and the son of Mr. Robert Sharpe and Mrs. Hilda Sharpe, both deceased. He was a Burlington High School and Davidson College graduate. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and was a veteran of the Omaha Beach landing. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge, and at age 24 became the youngest lieutenant colonel in the European Theater of Operations. After combat in Germany and Korea, he was promoted to full colonel at age 35. He commanded U.S. troops sent to aid earthquake victims in Agadir, Morrocco, and he was a part of the force that evacuated Americans and other noncombatants in rioting and rebel fighting in the Congo.Decorations received by Sharpe included two silver hearts, two Legions of Merit, five Bronze Hearts, the Army Commendation Medal, two Presidential Unit Citations and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. He attended the Command and General StaffCollege, the Armed Forces Staff College and the National War College. He was on the faculty of the Army War College. He retired in 1968 and served several years as president of SharpeConstruction.Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Dr Charlotte Sharpe Daly of Altamonte Springs and Ms. Martha Withers Sharpe of Alexandria, Va.; one son, Mr. Granville Attaway Sharpe Jr.; two sisters, Ms. Calva Sharpe Sellars of Mebane, Ms. Margaret Sharpe Younger of Sierra Vista, Ariz; a brother, Mr. Robert Adam Sharpe Jr. of Raleigh; and three grandchildren.Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.Rich and Thompson Funeral Service in Burlington provided local information.Mr. Arthur H. RogersBURLINGTON — Mr. Arthur Henry Rogers, 92, of 1806 Edgewood Ave., died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, at his home after a short period of failing health.An native of Albemarle, he was the husband of Mrs. Trudy Broadwell Rogers, who survives, and the son of Mr. Benjamin Marshall Rogers and Mrs. Emma Furr Rogers, both deceased. He was a pioneer in ladies’ hosiery manufacturing and yarn development. He is credited with developing panty hose as a commercial product while at Glen Raven Mills. The original idea he attributed to Allen Gant Sr., then president of Glen Raven Mills.He began his career as a hosiery knitter with Wiscassett Mills in Albemarle. He came to Glen Raven Mills in 1936 to start their hosiery operation in Alta-mahaw. He eventually became executive vice president in charge of hosiery and yarn tex-turing operations. He served as a member of Glen Raven Mills Board of Directors.He also was a founder of Stanley Knitting Mills, a diversified apparel, headwear and elastic fabric manufacturer which had its headquarters in Oakboro. He served as chairman of the board of Stanley from 1946-1996. He was vice chairman of the board at the time of his death. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington.Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Trudy Roger Evans of Birmingham, Ala.; two sons, Mr. Arthur H. Rogers Jr. and Mr. Marshall C. Rogers, both of Albemarle; three brothers, Mr W. Ray Rogers and Mr. John P Rogers, both of Oakboro, and Mr Robert L. Rogers of Statesville; seven grandchildren; and twc great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Velma Rogers Smith and a brother, Mr. Paul S Rogers.The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptisi Church of Burlington by Dr Craig McMahan, pastor, and Dr Dale O. Steele, former pastor.
