He was successful and was commissioned a first lieutenant of infantry. He was transferred to Camp Lewis and made range officer there, having charge of the rifle range of the big cantonment following his close study of rifle fire while a member and officer of the Helena Rifle club. When the 91st division moved to the Atlantic coast Captain Strong went along as the regimental supply officer for the 363rd infantry. With that organization he fought in the Meuse and Argonne battles and also in Belgium. While in active service he was promoted to the rank of captain because of his ability to bring supplies to his men under fire and was cited in general orders for his ability. Later when one of the companies of his regiment advanced under fire he went along and took charge of the company after all of the other officers of the command had been shot down. For that act he was decorated by the Belgian government with the Belgian Croix de Guerre.
