Hawkins is a member of the 16th Infantry of the regular army. He enlisted at Iodianapolis May 30th and Is one of the few Indiana boys who saw service at Santiago.He was stationed at Fort McPherson and later at Tampa, Fla., before embarking for Cuba. He was in the thickest of the light at Santiago, as might be supposed from the list of dead and wounded of his regiment, which was over two hundred. Private Hawkins has enjoyed perfect health ever sioce he enlisted and comes home bale and hearty. When asked about the reports of mismanagement In the army Hawkins said: ‘♦Well, I have nothing to say now, but when I am discharged I will be free to speak my mind.”
