Marvin Stiehl, 214 E. 5th itreet, is home on a 30 - day ;ave after 17 months over-eas, the last nine in Vietnam.He was recently awarded the Javy Commendation Medal k'ith Combat Distinguishing De-'ice for proving courage under ire during an encounter withhe Viet Cong while aboard the iCU-1 conducting salvage oper-itions along Ben Tre river, Vi-rtnam.Period for the award is from Vlarch 30 to April 19, this/ear when Stiehl and six other non were engaged in the sal-/age of a river assault craft .vhich had been sunk as a result of enemy action.Despite hazardous currents, waterb('rne mines and booby traps, the men tirelessly prepared the craft for salvage. While traveling along the Benthe unit came under enemy au-' tomatic weapons and rocket at-1 tack. Their unit proceeded fur-1 ther downstream returning the, enemy fire. As a result the craft was successfully brought to a repair facility.1-ireman Stiehl also holds the Navy and Navy .Unit Commeii-^ dation Ribbons, a Combat Rib-| bon; National Defense Ribbon! and two Ribbons for Vietnam service. He is a 1968 graduate of Albert Lea High School and entered the U. S. Navy in November the same year. He re-i ceived basic trainmg at San^ Diego before two month.s at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In .April, 1969 he was assigned to Civic Bav. PhilipiTines for eight months and then to Vietnam for nine months, .\fter his leave, he will report to his new duty station aboard the destroyerUSS Hull DD945, San Diego,
