Henry Ware and W.- H.Nall, Owners.Excavation for the stage of a new theater, designed to be the largest and finest between Kansas City and Los Angeles, will begin next Tuesday, morning. The building is to be. •erected by W. H. Nall and Henry Ware on the site of the Grand.. Its total seating capacity will be 3000.The new show house Is to be under the same management as the Grand is at present. Samuel Draper Dunlop will be manager, and E. C. Bishop, treasurer. Only the highest class road shows and stock companies will be played. For the purpose of lining up a bunch of shows for the new ,Grand and also to purchase opera chairs and other equip-m «ment, Treasurer Bishop will leave this: morning, over the Santa Fe, for LosbiiafoaVrictc-s cit\£Angeles.While it is probable that the the-, ater will be run under the name of ‘ the Grand, it will not bear the slight-. ^ est resemblance to the old Grand. It j ^ is to be a modern, up-to-date theater in every respect, with a* stage large enough to accommodate any company upon the road. No expense will be spared in the purchase and installation of equipment. It As un- | J derstood that the cost of. the theater complete, will be close to $40,000.The new show house will face I ( west instead of south, and the stage L 5s to be just'east of the south end . of the old Grand.- In the rear of thebuilding will be a ten-foot alley. The h theater is to be 140 feet long and il | .feet wide.Nc dressing rooms will be upon .the stage, which will therefore ex- ] ^ tend the entire width of the building. It is to be at least 40 feet j}long. In fact the new Grand is to have a larger stage, as; well as alarger ’ seating capacity,; than any theater in Arizona. There. u will be two entrances, one on: the side and one in the rear. Either will be large.enough to admit an automobile or afiro 'department.The front is to be very artistic. Just inside will be a spacious lobby, with dressing and rest rooms on each side. - The lower floor of the* auditorium will slope at the proper angle and the balcony, will extend almost to the stage. All seating arrangements will be the best obtainable. Regular opera chairs, which open when a button is touched, * *111 be installed. The boxes will be large and elegantly fitted up.All the interior of the theater will be tinted in soft tones. One of the most unique and modern features will bo the lighting system. Light will be furnished by electric bulbs, concealed in the. ceiling. Atiother expensive feature will be the heating,, for the theater is to be as comfortable as such a building could possibly be.Plans for the theater were drawn by a man named Winters, who is a contractor as well as an architect and who will construct the building. This morning Mr. Winters will commence the erection of a temporary roof over the Grand. .This work will be finished tomorrow and Tuesday mornng he will commence excavating for the stage;* The theater, will be built right over the southern portion of the Grand and the old walls torn out. . For a short time the Grand will be- a rather small house.Mr. Winters has contracted to complete the building*.In ^5 dqys. In-order to-do this he will have to employ- two eight-hour' shifts of carpenters, bricklayers and other artisans. He is confident of his ability to do the work on contract time, in a satisfactory manner. Mr. Winters built the Fulton opera house at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and is an expert in modern theater construction.Messrs Dunlop and Bishop say that they- intend .-to have no mediocre attractions at their house. They will endeavor to secure the very- best road shows traveling through the southwest. Mr. Bishop hopes to in-3uee many- . companies which would lot plav this section otherwise, to :ome to Phoenix this winter and appear* in his theater.1I
