Posthumous Award Ot Medai RevealedMrs. Novelle Newsom, 1615 Sixth, has been notified by the War deoartment that the Bronze Star medal has been posthumously awarded to her husband, Pvt. Carl W. Newsom, killed in action last December.The medal was awarded for “heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on Dec. 7, 1944.” The citation reads in part, As the platoon of which Pvt. Newsom was a rifleman was assaulting a heavily fortified enemy position, it encountered .flanking enemy machine gun fire. Realizing the necessity for protection on the flank receiving enemy fire. Pvt. Newsom, with utter disregard for his own safety, moved 25 yards into an exposed position and placed effective fire on the enemy- position. During this action Pvt. Newsom was fatally wounded. His courage inspired all the men. in his platoon and materially aided the assault troops in completing their mission.”The decoration will be forwarded to the - commanding general of the Eighth Service command. Dallas, who will select an officer to make the presentation to Mrs. Newsom.
