Bullard: County fair was a successNANETTE GUYTON SYLVESTER SCIPIO Staff WritersAttendance at the 1990 Robeson County Fair increased from last year and event president Hubert Bullard says the fair was a success.“The overall attendance for the week was close to 40,000 people,” he said. “We were up in attendance every day except for Thursday, ar:; I think low turnout on Thursday was due to rain. Overall, more people attended the fair this year than last year. Last year, about 35,000people attended.“Overall, I think this is the best fair we’ve had. I received good comments about the games, concessions, and the quality of the rides. Also, the exhibits, educational booths and agricultural exhibits were the best.”Bullard said activities such as the hog shows and the 4-H poultry contest were well received and residents went to extremes to show the best of agriculture inRobeson County.Bullard said this was the first year the fair was open on Sunday.“Sunday was pretty much a family-oriented day,” he said. “It was an opportunity to provide discounted ride specials. We took $2 off the admission price. Also, Gerber Children’s Wear had a company-sponsored family day at the fair and gave free tickets to their employees.”While Gerber’s employees were honored Sunday, Or-rum High School had a big day on Saturday.Not only did its varsity and junior varsity squads win the cheerleading competition, its Future Farmers of America members came away winners in the tractor driving contests.The cheerleading competition kicked off with eight squads in the junior varsity division and eight in the varsity division. The Orrum squads came out victors.Taking second place in the varsity division was Lumberton Senior High's squad and taking second place in the junior varsity division was Fairmont,The schools competing were St. Pauls, Parkton, Red Springs, Lumberton, Fairmont, Littlefield, Magnolia and Orrum.Please see FAIR. oaaeaA
