Husband Of Local Woman Retires From Air ForceColonel Harry D. Whye, husband of the former Dorothy Hanacik, retired from the United States Air Force on August 31, 1970 with 30 years ofservice.Colonel Whye, a native of Middletown, Pennsylvania, enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet in Salt Lake City, Utah on September 24, 1942. He completed Navigation training and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on December 4, 1943. He served 13 months in the 15th Air Force in Italy flying B-17s. On his 27th mission he was forced to parachute from his disabled plane over Yugoslavia and with two members of his crew evaded capture for 13 days before returning to friendly forces. Colonel Whye had numerous assignments in the United States and Alaska after returning from Italy. He served in the Strategic Air Command for approximately 14 years, primarily on the Intelligence Staff while at the same time remaining proficient as an Aircraft Navigator. In 1966, Colonel Whye was the Director of Reconnaissance, (Intelligence^, 7th Air Force, Saigon, South Vietnam. At the time of his retirement from the Air Force, Colonel Whyewas the Commander of the Air Force ROTC Detachment at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota.Colonel Whye is a graduate of Middletown High School; the University of Oklahoma; Air Force Navigation schools atSan Marcos and Ellington AFB,Texas; the Air Force Squadron Officers School,Command and Staff College and the Air War College.Colonel Whye*s awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, Purple Heart, Air Force Commendation medal with 2 oak leafclusters, Distinguished Unit Citation with oak leaf cluster, American and Europeancampaign ribbons and the Vietnamese ribbons.Colonel and Mrs. Whyehave three children, Donald, an Airman First Class, stationed at Kelly AFB, Texas; Michael, a student at the University of Houston and Sandria, a sixth grade student at the KleinIntermediate School. The Whyefamily is making their home in Houston, Texas where he will be associated with M. David Lowe Personnel ServicesInc.Colonel Whye is the son of Mrs. Sara Whye of Middletown, Penna.Giant Rally Planned For HornetsStudents and adults alike are invited to attend the Caldwell Hornet pep rally to be held this Friday at 2:30 p.m. on Hornet Field in the North bleacher section. The public is invited to help boost team spirit for the Hornets.Junior and Senior High students will participate in the rally.
