SOME CASES OF INFLUENZA- (Public Institutions Closed to Keep Down Spread of Disease That is Taking Country.A good many cases of la grippe or the Spanish influenza are reported in the town and county. While the disease has not reached the stage of a serious epidemic here so far, every \ precaution is bc/ing takcir to prevent such an epidemic. All public 'gathering's have' been prohibited by the board of aldermen and will be prohibited as lone4 as is considered necessary.Following a called meeting of the board of aldermen, held Saturday afternoon, Mayor Bristol issued the fol-1 o w i m? proclamation:“Whereas an epidemic of Spanish influenza or grippe is sweeping over the United States, and whereas a number of cases have developed in the city of Statesville, indicating that we may be threatened with a serious epidemic of this disease;“Now, therefore, I, L. B. Bristol, mayor of the city of Statesville, acting under the authority of the State board of health, and by and under the advice of the-city physician, and acting under and by virtue of an ordinance duly passed by the board of aldermen of. the city of Statesville, at a called meeting held on the 5th day of October, 1018, said ordinance being based on the laws of the State of North Carolina as found in Chapter G2 of the Public Laws .of 1911, Sections 9, 10, 14 and 15jt do hereby declare that fi'om and after 6 o'clock, p. m.. on October 5th, 1918, until 6 o’clock, p. m., on October loth, 1018, that all day schools, Sunday -schools, churches, picture shows and colleges, both white and colored, shall be closed, and that during said ten-day pe-nod all public gatherings of every kind within doors shall be prohibited, “it is further provided that in theevent said disease shall prove to be a menace to the city of Statesville and the circumstanced, shall seem to demand it, a further extension of the aforesaid closing order will he made.“Done at Statesville, this the 5th day of October, 1918.“L.
