We have long thought that he must have an especial source of strength and wisdom.THE present administration seems to be coming out pretty strong for equal sultrage. Why shouldn't it ? It is sensible and fair on every other public question.It transpires that the name ot the German submarine commander whoso cruelly torpedoed the steamship Arabic is Schneider. We are ashamed of him—he is no relative of ours.His enemies are quarreling with Governor Hatfield because he is unwilling to pay that alleged Virginia debt. But it is nothing to the way they’d carry on if he’d yield to the hold-up.In Pittsburg several crooked election otticials have been arrested tor illegal methods of handling the ballots. What’s the use ? There are not jails enough in State to hold one-tenth of the crooked politicians of that city.THE leaven is working even in New York. An increase of £100 in the State retail liquor license brings this license up to $1,500 yearly, and it is said that 600 saloons wilt be forced out of business in Manhattan and Brooklyn.THE pay of the common soldier in the French army is to be increased to five cents a day. We hardly think this is enough we should hate to stand up in front ot those deadly Germans and be shot at for five cents a day.The lines against alcohol are being tightened in England An order to go into effect October llth forbids any person treating to spirituous liquor of any sort. This will be hard on the poor old bums who hang around waiting for some one to set 'em up.I he Supreme Court of West Virginia has declared constitutional the scandalous W; .iamson charter. Probably the reason th. i there is no provision in the consti-tu;. hi to cover such an outrageous meas-u-• is that its framers never thought that such an indecent act could be passed by a l.gislature.The Prohibition party of Washington county. Md.. has nominated a ticket. It seems to us the Prohibitionists could do a great deal more for the temperance cause it they would unite with the Anti-Saloon League people and support the candidates who are known to favor real temperance legislation.At the local option election in Minneapolis on Monday the wets w on by a decided majority. Thcv won by the usual methods ot the advocates of the saloon—that is, they bought and bribed the voters and in cases where this was not sufficient they stole the dry votes from the ballot boxes and stuffed them with wet ballots.Some Interesting Facts.Editor Register-Through the courtesy of Mr. W. Martin, ot “Maple Shade,” the old Lower Farm of Shepherd fame, 1 have read very fully the accounts of our early ancestors and their dealings with William Brown, a merchant of Shepherdstown, Va., between 1777 and 1783. W illiam Brown married Elizabejh Shepherd, a daughierof Thomas and Elizabeth VanMetre Shepherd, the founders of Shepherdstown. Elizabeth Shepherd was born 1738 and died 1788. William Brown died 1801. leaving a large family : Sallie Brown, b. 1771, d. 1845, m. Rev. Wm. Eaty ; Wm. Brown, b. 1774; Mary Brown, b. 1768, m. John Grove; Thomas Abraham Brown, b. 1767, d. 1768; Elizabeth Brown, b. 1764; John Brown, b. 1763; Shepherd Brown, b. 1776, d. 1825; George Brown, b 1777; Hannah Matilda Brown, b. 1781, in. Dr. Evans.This old account book, found while making repairs at the Lower Farm, contains the names of many of our distinguished citizens of Revolutionary times.In 1781 Edward Rumsey and his son Charles had an account.In 1783 James Rumsey, the inventor in whose memory the State of West Virginia is erecting a monument on the cliffs ot Shepherdstown, also had an account.Of distinguished Revolutionary officers, I find the following names :1777, Captain William Morgan.1777, General Lee.1779, Colonel Robert Carter Willis.1779.
