Local Man Is Aboard Carrier That Picked Up AstronautDonnal W. Hinkle, airman, USX, a former Chillicothean, is serving aboard the support aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge, which yesterday picked up Navy Cmdr Walter M. Schirra. jr., after the astronaut's six orbits around the earth.The space capsule with Schirra m it was hoisted aboard the Kearsarge and the vessel is now enroute to Honolulu with him. Schirra had landed his space capsule within 9,000 yards of the carrier. a unit of the recovery force which the U. S. Navy and U. S. j Marine Corps assigned to the Pacific Ocean area for the third manned orbital flight into space. The organization of ships and aircraft units is known as Task Force 130 and is composed of a 4.000-man force.This was the first time thePacific Fleet units were assigned to Project Mercury operations.Hinkle attended Chillicothe High School and enlisted in the Navy in January of i960. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Coleman Smith, now live at St. Joseph. His wife is the former Bettie Sue Troeger. who is staying in Chillicothe with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. John Troeger. while her husband is at seaMarshal L. Hatfield, seaman, USN, sob of Mr and Mrs. Joseph A. Hatfield. 145 Stewart street, Chillicothe. is aboard the aircraftcarrier USS Lake Champlain, aunit of the recovery forces assigned to the Atlantic. The recovery was planned for the Pacific but Task Force 140 was put on! station in the Atlantic in case it was decided to terminate the flight there.
