Soldiers' Letters j From Overseas and in Camps■November 3rd, 1918• s“Somewhere in France.”My Dear Folks:Having just completed a shortmarch my platoon is resting this P. M. My new home is “an old shack ’ (built of corrugated iron and in civilian life would be a first class wood shed, however under these conditions it looks like J. Pierpont Morgan's[residence to me. It has a good wood ■floor in it and is located near an En~f1 gineer’s dump, so I believe I can• make myself comfortable, providing we remain here. Some time this af-«ternoon it is up to me to s alvage aiistove. A good fire in the evening is I a very much sought for pleasure.I The days are easy to pass for 1 amjbusy from 5 A. M. to lt;P. M., but ati| night when ones thoughts begin to ; travel back to the old days I am glad ■for sleep to overtake me. j It is difficult for me to describe my j mental state since entering active j service* Everyone here, although jthey are alert and very much aliveiand in excellent, stmil.se serin In hemg m the road at the edge of a small, village in front of our rock crusherand old Fritz “zinged one” withintwenty feet, of me. It crashed through a building throwing stone and tile-roofing every direction, but didn’t kill or injure any one. They I continued to shell us during the re-i mainder of the day, but we all pulled through it. We have been shelled quite a number of times, also bombed j by airplanes. However the world, was too big for them to hit us. Some*time when I get back home I’ll tell vou more about it.My ole pal, Master Engineer Hauser, and myself spend nine tenths of our leisure time discussing what we will do when we get back home. He is from Gary, Indiana, and we have • soldiered together for a year and two months. If we carry out one-thousandth of our plans we will surely turn things upside down. After we roll in our blanket at night he will say “Well Stew, we won’t have to live this way much longer.”; Some times we will have the warwon and be home by Christmas, then we will be lighting until this timefnext year. It is laughable to think;of such a rapid change of opinion,!any way that big day is coming soon and the sooner the better. I amsmvimiK to f**ot h:u*.k to lavino* streets
