OUR ARMY CORRESPONDENCE.athiOT6C.neefiej°clt;.erP1sethheIhdcScusheWrItpegeaFROM THE THIRD INDIANA CAVALRY.Amosville, Rappahannock Co., Va., Nov. 9th, 1862.—Mr. Editor:—Think-1 ing the Third had vet friends feeling for [m her interests, and anxious lo know her|cc doings in the present forward movement,1 will endeavor to give a brief description of what we have done since leaving Maryland. We started with Pleasanton's brigade, . 1 ' . ' ' * oon Oct. 26th, from near Knoxville, Md., and crossed the Potomac at Berlin. Theweather being very unfavorable for advancing, a halt was ordered near Lovetts-ville, three miles from the river. Here we remained twenty-four hours till the weather become more pleasant, and then advanced toward Snicker's Gap, halting seven miles from there at Purcellville.— Here we encamped and remained until Saturday, Nov. 1st, (in the meantime Dicketing the various roads leading to-4 O ' fward the enemy,) when our brigade was jt0 ordered to advance toward Ashby’s vc Gap. We marched nearly eight miles when we found a large force of the rebel cavalry; our cannon were soon planted, and a brisk skirmish with the enemv's artillery ensued. In the meantime the icavalry was sent forward to engage theI S' O| skirmishers of the enemy. Two squadrons of our regiment, companies 0, D,E and F, were dismounted as carbineers, ■ 0 for the purpose of routing them from ! their strong hold. We fired briskly fori^1 half an hour, the compliment being re- c0 turned with double force from the rebels. They finding we were determined, brought up their artillery and gave us a few rounds or grapeand cannisier, which caused us to fall back to our horses, and then nearer our own artillery. •. They followed us a short distance, hut we soon drove them back with our carbines; eachhlt;Ereciurdchethis.one, as the saying is, “popped away on , Dhis own hook.” During the night, each i party held the ground occupied during j the day. On Nov. 2.1 and 3d. we pushed them before us beyond Upperville, at which place we arrived at 6 P. M. on the 3.1. On Nov. 4th. we went through Ash-by’s Gap. but the rebels had crossed the _a. Shenandoah, and made good their escape.; vi t?” j A force of infantry and artillery were iys left here lo hold the Gap, while our regi-thvcsydcbewlOil'm*ihiM\m mment the same evening lurneil and raaruh- w io!e’«»d toward Manassas Gap, camping for the night near Piedmont. The next day ( our brigade advanced througli Markham, j m; land engaged the Hampton Legion about; so five miles from the place, toward Culpep-iuli Up.| per. They fought us vigorously until 2 o'- fr *. I clock, P. M., when we routed and pur-a! sued them until evening. This day’s I fighting will ever be remembered by theI -» 1 • mate j Third, for we charged upon the enemy land came in closer contact than ever be-j fore. Thursday and Friday, Nov. 6:hi and 7th. we followed after the retreating; foe, skirmishing with him but lit tie. On j j Friday evening we camped at Amosville,»est; an ! at 9 A. M. Saturday, we advanced • t£ twelve miles to Little Washington. HereI I * •I we again engaged the enemy, but-having £ejj; m artillery with us to compete with iiird! twfcir’s we fell back to where we are now j encamped, one-half mile from Amosville, ird | and encamped for the night. From ap-f.a! pearances we will get the Sabbath day to rest, as there are now no signs of a forward movement. Surely we need rest3n? be-ght111m-;av,1 for vve have had none since we left Pursuit i cell vi lie.^ . The Third has already a good name; „ht her name can be heard from all sisterregiments; and slie deserves it, for she:ide , as ouricehas borne well her part. The loss of our regiment in the several engagements within the past week, is but one prisoner (wounded) from Co. C. The loss of the enemy is considerable from accounts of citizens.
