Alden’s Only Survivorof the Civil War; HeEnjoys Good HealthAmariah Chandler, Alden’s only remaining civil war veteran, reachedhis 99th birthday last Monday andwas honor guest at two social affairs.The first was Sunday evening at the home of his grandson, Franklin Dodd, at Dows, they entertaining Mr. and Mrs. Jay Dodd, Mr. and Mrs. GuyBoyer and daughter Gloria, Mr. and Mrs. Adalbert Beal, Miss Elsie Dodd and Harrison Rogers. Mr. Chandler, Mrs. Jay Dodd and daughter Elsie and Mr. and Mrs. Adelbert Boal were dinner guests- Monday at the homeof his daughter, Mrs. Guy Boyer in Alden.Mr. Chandler enlisted in the union army at the age of 21 and wa.s a member of Co. H., 10th Val., a regiment that saw plenty of active service and because of the many engagements became known as the fighting JOth. He was wounded twice and .still carries a bullet in his left shoulder which he received at thebattle of Malvern Hill.Mr. Chandler was a resident of Shelburne Palls, Massachusetts, but following the death of his wife he came to Iowa and has since made his home with his daughters. Mrs. Guy Boyer and Mrs. Jay Dodd. Another daughter, Mrs. Thos. Lutman, lives at Humboldt, and his one son, Shirley Chandler, whose honra is in Spencer. Massachusetts.Mr. Chandler enjoys remarkably good health for one of his advancedyears and is still able to get a lot of. *eniovment out of life. *•H»e was the recipient of many letters and birthday greetings from friend,s and the receipt of thesebrought him much pleasure.
