—The battle of Monocacv, Md., is not one which is as well known as some in the history of the Civil War, but it was really one of the most important. General Lew Wallace with a mere handful of troops, held back General Early for more than a day, giving Grant the exact time in which to rush troops to the defense of Washington. Early tried to make the assault on the Nation’s capital, but considered it too difficult and went away. Orte day earlier he might have succeeded. The monument to the ’Pennsylvania troops who bore the brunt of that battle is a deserved testimonial to what was a mere forlorn hope which turned out to be of more consequence thansome hard earned victories.*
