Monument I'liveiled.The monument to the three Pennsvl-vonia regiments which took part in the I battle of Monocracy, and which was j erected by the State of Pennsylvania as a memorial of their valor, was unveiled at 12.30 o’clock Tuesday in the presence of a large number of survivors of the regiments.A special train was run from York, Pa., and on it came most of the veterans who attended the unveiling. On the rear end of the train was a Pullman car. containing Lieutenant Governor Murphy, of Pennsylvania, and the Governor’s staff, Governor Stuart, who was expected to be present, having been prevented from coming.The monument is located about three-fourth of a mile from Frederick Junction i on the north side of the Urbana pike and ! opposite the Araby church.The ceremonies were opened by Rev. Osborne Ingle.Capt. W. H. Lanius then in a brief speech presented the monument to the State of Pennsylvania, and Lieut. Gov. Murphy accepted the monument on behalf of the State. Capt. Robert T. Corn-well of West Chester, Pa., made the principal address of the day.The monument is built of Blue West-erley Granite and was furnished by the Smith Granite Co., of Westerly, R. I.,whose representative, Mr. H. E. Shen-ton, had charge of its erection. It is a shaft 35 feet in height, standing on a 1 base ten feet square. The base is a sin-i gle stone, 1£ feet in thickness, and weighs twelve tons. Surmounting it is a polished die with four Doric columns at the corners, and on the die stands a cylindrical shaft, w'ith a carved cap bear-ing on its top a ground polished ball of red Westerly granite, 3 feet 6 inches in diameter, on the front of which is .cut a Maltese cross, the emblem of the Sixth Army Corps.I Surrounding the monument is a fence, with granite posts and two rails of galvanized iron piping, making an enclosure 30 feet square. The plot belonging to the three regiments is marked on each I of the four corners by granite posts, weighing a ton each.
