Former Attorney Of jLubbock Writes Of ,Solomons FightingA first-hand account of fighting on Tulagi and Guadalcanalislands in the Solomons group is given in a letter received by George S. Berry, Lubbock attorney, from Vance Swaim, former local attorney, who reveals t.hat he has seen lots of Japs die and casually mentions that he himself has contributed much to sinking Japanese mortality rates.The letter was dated Sept. 28 from Tulagi island.About, the Tulagi battle ho says: “We made a landing on this island Aug. 7 and took the beach on the t 0th. Wc lost a lot of men as the Japs had machine guns around the whole island. . . . Wc were really under fire. ... At the end of seven days, we had driven them all to the jungle and caves. It took 52 days to kill them all.“The Japs landed a task force of 3,000 here about 10 days ago. Wet let them through the first line and then let them have it. We killed all but 27 and took themprisoners.”Swaim, a Marine, said he and a force of other Leathernecks were “over on Guadalcanal last week . . . had a lot of good hunting.”The Marines, said Swaim, cannot be appreciated until one sees them make a landing on a beach “in water up to their necks and shooting like hell . . . they never go back, always forward.”Swaim formerly was county attorney of Foard county. His parents reside in Crowell. His rank is that of a first class private.
