Jet Smash Kills Pilot, Perils HomesMOJAVE, Calif - (UP* — A jet fighter plane crashed at Mojave Marine Corps auxiliary base today, killing the pilot and scattering wreckage over a residential area. A mother and four young children in a house near the crash scene narrowly escaped death.The craft was identified as an F9F-8 Cougar. Base officials said the pilot was returning from a routine training mission.The crash occurred shortly after 9 a.m. (MST) near one of the base runways. Wreckage was hurled for a distance of four blocks.
