Years Overseas*” . • rAnother local veteran of the ISur-1 opcan war, Ptc. Floyd S. Johnson of 382 13th street, has recently returned home after being wounded in action. Pte. Johnson was one of the first from this district to enlist in the Canadian army and saw action at the breakthrough cast of Caen.Born in Medicine Hat and a pupil of this city’s public schools and the Alexandra High school, Floyd Johnson had been a member of the reserve army for nine years when lie enlisted in the Calgary Highlanders on the 15th of September, 1939. Competing his army training in Canada went overseas ai the end of Aug: ust in 1940. Then for the next four years/he took further training and waited for the invasion of the European continent which would event-pally lead to an Allied victory. During this long wait he saw London brave the Naxi attempt at her destruction.' In fact/he informed The News that he had been in the middle of London’s worst airraid* In . this $$$-hc was tossed into a pile ofshattered glass after having been thrown for quite a distance by the blast of a bomb. Recounting the experience, the ’Hat soldier said that hc received “nary a scratch/’ lie also saw robombs in flight while he was waiting for action in England.Then 1944 rolled around, and with it came D-day. Shortly after this historic date Johnson arrived in France with the, Calgary Highlanders. He fought but two''actions, the’ first in the breakthrough at Caen and; the other at Mai-SurOrnc where hc was wounded.
