Plains Men Join Service In Armyf% Nine Lubbock and South PlainsYoung men have been accepted forservice in the United States Armythrough the recruiting office here, 'Sergeant E. O. Slater, tn charge, -said Tuesday, Recruiting was opened -following the election after being jdosed for eight months.The nine men accepted far service were: Bernard F. Perkins,Plainview; Irion D. Cole, 812 Ave-pajic L. Lubbock; Cone 8. Wilson, Vfitost; Lonnie M. Black, Amherst; '^Chester F. Somers, 1100 Avenue J; Roberi H. Heckey. Amherst; J. B. Whittle, route 2, Lubbock; Kermit Letson, Amherst and Sam S. Nichols, Levclland.Cole, a former stenographer here,was sent to Fort Bliss where he■probably will receive appointment as stenographer to Brigadier General Walter C. Short, acting commandant at Fort Bliss, Sergeant Slater said.Nichols was assigned to the medical corps at William Beaumont hospital at Fort Bliss, Other recruits were assigned to the cavalry service. Wilson and Nichols had had previous army enlistments.“We have only a few more vacancies in the cavalry and artillery lists,” the sergeant said. He added that he did not know when recruiting would be clbsed.
