USSIAN RED FORCES BAT'ngand Useful Life of Pioneer Ohio Educator Comes to Close Following Attack of Heart Troubleenty-Year Term as Head of Ohio University Closed by Death of Its Chief Executive SundayA shadow of gloom falling over the entire city, d extending far into the educational world, caused rief to many as they heard the sad news of the death f President Alston Ellis, of Ohio University, who suc-umbed to heart trouble at 9:55 Sunday evening, a few inutes after returning from the First Presbyterian hurch, where he attended the evening worship.In the untiring activity of his administrative uties, Dr. Ellis had never impressed one as being ged although he had passed the seventy-third mile-tona. His sudden death came as a shock to the many riends of the executive and the student body of Ohio niversity where he had served as president for the ast twenty years.Dr. and Mrs. Ellis attended the orning and evening services at he First Presbyterian church, 'here he was a faithful and devout ember, and had spent the Sabbath thefr usual quiet and dignified anner. He returned from church nd for five minutes later, seemed o enjoy his usual good health. Sud-enly while talking to his wife, a ain caused him to clutch his heart, he family physician, Dr. David iddle was hurridely called, but he noted educator was beyond all elp. An hour after taking ill. Dr. Ellis breathed his last, wih his beloved wife and devoted physician at his bedside. His last hour on earth was filled with intense pain and suffering. Dr. Ellis has never been subject to heart trouble before and death in this form caused surprise among the large circle of friends of the deceased.Dr. Ellis stood high among the leaders of education in the United States, and his death will be observed in every University in Ohio with chapel exercises, as all university presidents have been notified.The students of Ohio University, who have benefitted by the wonderful ability of their president were seen today discussing the tragedy in hushed groups. They will attend classes as usual Monday and Tuesday, but there will not be any co’ lege sessions on Wednesday.Dean C. W. Chubb will direct the student’s part in the funeral ceremony. He conducted the chapel exercises which were called at nine o’clock this morning. He ,was president of the Ohio Superintendents Association 1875, Ohio Teachers Association in 1888, Ohio College Association 1892 and 1893. lie was also the president of the Ohio Speech Arts Association 1901 to 1911, and of the Ohio Presidents and Deans Association in 1910 andvented the carrying out of the late president’s great program for Ohio.President Ellis had purchased a fine home at Wyoming, a Cincinnati suburb, a few weeks ago, preparatory to his retirement from active educational work next June. After the meeting of the board of trustees of the Ohio University last June he announced that this year, his twentieth at Ohio, would be his last, and that he might retire some time during the year. At this meet ing of the board be was authorised to name a committee from the trustees to name his successor as president of Ohio. This committee was named. It was also voted by the board that no one should be considered for the presidency who had ever been connected with the institution.SIX GH LDRENFalse Alarm of Fire New York Causes PanicNEW YORK, Nov. 15.—Three men were under arrest today while various city departments were con-I ducting investigations on the fire • panic in a movie theatre on the lower East Side late yesterday which resulted in the death of six children and injury of a dozen others.The stampede was started when a woman shouted “Fire,'* an smoke from a furnace fire seeped through the floor. The victims ranged in I age from two years of age to twelve. Those under arrest were ; Bernard Weinberg and Max i.Schwartz, proprietors and Joseph 'Polani, the manager, who started the furnace fire. Dr. Ellis was the principal of the third district school of Covington, Ky., In 1867 and 1868. He was the superintendent of the Hamilton public schools from 1871 to 1879 and from 1887 to 1892. He was the superintendent of the Sandusky public schools from 1880 to 1887. Dr. Ellis was president of the State Agricultural College, Fort Collins, Colo., 1892 to 1900.Dr. Ellis became president of Ohio University, of this city, on July 18, 1901, and has been here since that time. During his timeTheir home life was a thing of beauty, and was an Inspiration to their friends.When Dr. Ellis came to Ohio to assume the presidency there were about 300 students, and he lived to see this enrollment increased tenfold within his administration as president. There were but five buildings in the university group when he came to Athens. During his incumbency and largely thru his personal efforts, the legislature provided money to erect many new buildings of the finest character, to increase the equipment and to add thousands of dollars yearly in appropriations.
