Ronald Lockman, 23, of refusing to obey orders to go to Vietnam.The court deliberated only 11 minutes at the end of a trial that erupted in violent confrontation between civilian spectators and military police soon after Lockman had pleaded a loud and clear not guilty,”aLockman, a Philadelphia Negro, declares he refused an order Sept. 15 to go to Vietnam because he believes the war isillegal.♦Lockman was convicted on two;counts, one carrying a pen-alty* of five years and dishonorably discharge and the other a one-year term.the courtroom uproar had erupted as the trial counsel passed around the charges and specifications.Oiie of 60 spectators in therear of the courtroom yelled, “this trial is illegal and unconstitutional,”Four military police carried him from the courtroom as he cried, “Justice, justice.”He Identified himself as Richard Chariper, 42, of Los Angeles.By 9 a.m. a crowd of about 75 civilians, generally antagonistic to the trial, gathered outside. Two demanded to go into the crowded courtroom and were refused.They started using abusive language and were arrested. They struggled and yelled as they were taken to a paddy wagon. Others mixed in, and amid screams and yells ah MP was rolling on the ground with a demonstrator.Sporadic outbursts of the same sort occurred. In all, nine demonstrators were arrested.Lt. Col. C. 0.
