NelBon was wounded in action and was in the hospital at the time he wrote the last letter:(11France, October 3, 1918.Dear Grandparents.I am feeling fine and dandy in my new dugout- that my chum and I just made so that we could bunk together.I am at the front now, but there isn't i much doing noW except a little artil-1 lery dueling. We don't do anything ■ all day long but hide from areoplahes. Wow! A big shell just' lit a ways above our dugout but didn't do anything but send a few rocks around us. This morning we found a song book and sang over a few hymns. We just saw a brave and daring Boche come over (here the letter is censored), but Germany is one plane and aviator less for our machine gun got the BoChe before he went far. I just, get ope meal a day and that is at night, but we sure have enough when we do get it. Harry Nelson,Co. 4th, U. S. Ipf.Somewhere in France,October 7, 1918.Dear Grandparents.Am feeling fine and still alive, thank God, but am in the hospital with a shrapnell wound in the knee and below it. I was wounded the evening of the 5th, and was operated on last night. I didn't get hurt goi|ng over the top, but a one pounder got me after we advanced and dug in. I applied first aid on the wound myself instead of going to the surgeon, and helped cary a wounded man in from.the front. The doctors never took off the bandages for they said I did a good job. Don't worry for I will soon be able to hop around like a rabbit. I came through three hospitals before I got here. Was'treated good. They gave us cookies and other things which all tasted good for we were hungry.Your Grandson, Harry Nelson.
