Private Downs was assigned to Company A, 6th Battalion, 2nd Brigade, t’nited States Army Training Center, Infantry.The promotion was awarded two months earlier than usual, under an Army policy providing incentive for outstanding trainees. It was based on range firing and physical combat proficiency test scores, military bearing and leadership potential.During his eight weeks at the Training Center, Private Downs was taught basic infantry skills— firing live ammunition under simulated combat conditions, protective measures and first aid for chemical, biological and radiological attacks, military bearing and courtesy, and the use of modern weapons.‘.V.v,PV'I .
