BRINKMAN REPORTSON CAMP CLAIBORNE. The chief drawback to army life, according to Halleck Brinkman, member of a medical detachment ofthe 34th division stationed at CampClaiborne, is that it isn't active enough except when the troops are on maneuvers. Now at home on a 15-day furlough, Brinkman gives an interesting account of life in a camp of about 18,000 soldiers from Iowa, Minnesota and the Dakotas. In addition to the 34th division of the National Guard, ,special groups including a regiment of negro troops are at the camp. Its location is in the middle of Louisiana in cut timber land with many swamps. At the site of the camp the swamps have been drained, and every effort is made to keep sanitary conditions the best possible. All water puddles are promptly sprayed after a rain to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne malaria fever. Sewage is disposed of promptly. The work of the medical detachment, to which Brinkman belongs,, is to pick up sick and injured soldiers, give theui first aid, and turn them over to the doctors of the medical regiment. The number of cases of sickness requiring the attention of a doctor is less than in civilian life, j but a higher percentage report to medical stations because soldiers report on every slight injury or sickness. Ordinary indispositions and slight cuts which would be treated at home are reported to the medical officer. The 34th division has a football team and there are provisions for playing base ball. Recreation halls, one for each company, are built but not yet equipped. Each regiment lias a big recreation center where motion pictures are shown and meetings are held.Living in a country so different from northern Iowa is a great experience, Brinkman states , but he would not care to be stationed there permanently.(Re\IrDayitoriJamgresvisitbrotworsaidtheWeseasworIistatistilt; lost the sine to iWO)Uniandfon to ishiAira.senproPitPolGaDasouKe:BeO]
