Brigade soldier was shot and killed Sunday night while holding a gun on his battery commander and another officer in the unit near Ulm, Germany, the Army said Monday.A short time earlier the soldier, Pfc. Ralph E. Hughes, 20, had taken a 45-caliber pistol.The pistol Hughes took from a combination switchboard and arms room was the “duty’’ wea-pon, which had a loaded clip, the Army spokesman said.Hughes was observed taking the weapon and clip by the unit armorer from behind a screen dividing the room, the officialsaid.After notifying Maj. Alfred George, the battery CO, the armorer followed along and keptan eye on Hughes.Meanwhile, George and his signal officer, 2nd Lt.
