G.I. Killed WhileHolding Gun On Albany OfficerMajor A. Whitby George, with his artillery brigade in Germany, visited his father here recently after attending an artil-ery school in the States. Major George recently received publicity in the Stars Stripes when he and another officer were held at gun-point by a soldier. Story from the Stars Stripes will interest Major George's friends: HEIDELBERG—A 56th Arty. Brigade soldier was shot and killed Sunday night while holding a gun on his battery commander and another officer in the unit near Ulm, Germany, the Army said Monday.A short time earlier the soldier, Pfc. Ralph El. Hughes, 20, had taken a 45-caliber pistol.The pistol Hughes took from a combination switchboard and •arms room was the “duty” wea-pon, which had a loaded clip, the Army spokesman said.Hughes was observed taking the weapon and clip by the unit armorer from behind a screen dividing the room, the official said.After notifying Maj. Alfred George, the battery CO, the armorer followed along and keptan eye on Hughes.Meanwhile, George and his signal officer. 2nd Lt.
