The first instance in the Union army of a commm sionod officer being reduced to the rank*, is thecalat First Lieutenant Josispfi J. Ennis, Seventy-first Onio Regiment, found guilty of forging an orderf detailing mm to go from Louisiana to Cincinnati, t4 arrest deserters. He absented himself seven monthi under this forsred order. A cour t-mai tial sentences him to serve three years or during the war, as a pri vate, in snch regiment as the General eonimandm| the Department might designate, and Gen. Bukjo side selected the Twentieth Kentucky Regiment, ani ordered the offender sent to it uuder guard.
