Nine sons of the Hovers have served their country in the forces.The ninth son is iww serving Uncle Sara as an infantry man in Korea, He is Homer, 23.When North Korean troops ambushed and killed six American soldiers and one South Korean below the armistice line last week, President and Mrs. Johnson were just 30 miles away. Homer Hoven was only three miles from the scene.The Hovens are proud to have had Dine sons tD provide in the service of their country. 01 the nine, five served during World War II.They included Floyd Hoven* 47, Cathlamet, who flew over Germany as a bombardier in American missions from England; Dewey Hoven, 45, Hoquiatn, who was an army infantryman in Italy; Albert. Hoven, 43, Fort Bragg, Calif., who served with the U,S. Fleet in the South Pacific; Ted Hoven, 41, Scottsburg, Ore., who served in a naval hospital at Pearl Harbor; and Richard Hoven, who would have been 39 had he lived. Injuries received in an automobile accident near Winlock in 1941 kept him from serving overseas in World War 1L He died in 1952 from these injuries,Roy Hoven t 37, Powder Valley, Calif,, was a mechanic in an infantry outfit in Korea during the Korean war. lietween wars, Clarence Hoven, 31, route 1, Winlock, was a mechanic with the U,S,,Atr Force in Alaska and Harold Hoven, 28, Lcngview, was a machinist on the USS Yorktowa, an aircraft carrier,Ray Hoven, 21, the only son living at home, has a physical disability and is unable to serve* in the Armed Farces- All of the other sans are married.In additlcn to their r'service boys,” the Hovens have three daughters, of which two are married* The daughters arc Mrs, Darrell (Lucille) Forney, Vancouver; Mrs. Jerry (Ruth) Larson, San Antonio, Tex,, and Edna Jean Hoven, who is living with Mis. Larson in Texas while Mrs. Larson's husband takes his third tour of duty in Korea. Larson is a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force,The Hovens have lived In the Winlock area for 37 years, Hoven worked for Long Bell for 24 years at Ryderwood until 1953 when the firm closed down its operations in Ryderwood. They live on the Johnson Road, five miles south of Winlock.The Hovens have a number of pictures of their sons taken when they served their country, On special occasions such as Veterans Day, it gives them a great deal of pleasure to haul the old photos out and look them over onco again.
