Nevada VFW Commander Pays OfficialVisit to Reno Post; Outlines ProgramAlfred J. Alleman, Las Vegas, commander, Department of Nevada, Veterans of Foreign Wars made his official visit to Reno Post No. 407 last Thursday night in Veterans Hail, State Building.Commander Alleman spoke on his attendance at the national convention which was held in New York City, where a large delegation attended, andmade a bid for the national convention for Las Vegas. He spoke on the Voice of Democracy program, which is being sponsored by the national organization in every department. He was named state chairman by the national oommander. This program is open to all Nevada students in the 10th, llth and 12th grades, public, private and parochial schools. Each studentwrites and delivers orally a five minute script on the theme, I Speak for Democracy.”Alleman said the awards include a $1,500 college scholarship to top national winner, and a free trip to Washington, D.C. for the top winner in each state. The University of Missouri school of journalism is awarding $500 journalism scholarships to the four top finalistsReno-Sparks Radio Amateurs Meet Todayand gold recordings of their scripts. The sponsors are the National Association of Broadcasters, Electronic Industries Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.Alleman concluded his talk with a-9-point program which included: membership {2 phases), post audits, inspections, community service, youth activities, Buddy Poppies, Loyalty Day, VFW Week and the attendance of members to the national convention, which willbe held in Los Angeles nc::t year.Plans were formulated for the annua! post and auxiliary children's Christmas party. The party will be held in Veterans Hall, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. There will be a Santa Claus, Christmas tree with all the trimmings. Children will receive a gift, ice cream, cookies, balloons and aChristmas stocking. All post and auxiliary members are requested to,bring a gift not toexceed 50 cents, plainly markedfor boy or girl. By doing so each child will be assured of a gift.The post and auxiliary will give'Christmas baskets to needyfamilies in Reno. The post voted money also to purchase staple items and all post and auxiliary members are requested to bring their canned goods to their respective meetings to help fill the baskets.Earnest W.
