The Japanese had dispatched five convoy v from Truk to bolster the Bougainville garrison and it appeared only a matter of hours until the battle is joined. Meanwhile, General MavArthur and Admiral Halsey continued to pick off Jap planes, yesterday accounting for 63 more. The map at bottom ahou's the strategy of the Solomons campaign, which started in August. 1942, when U. S. Marines landed on Guadalcanal, Tulagi and Florida islands to begin winning hack the islands the Japs had seii*d earlier that year. After six months of battle, the Guadalcanal base was won and there followed quicker occupation of the Russell Islands, Rendova, New Georgia, Veils Lavella and Santa Isabel. Now the Treasury Islands (Mono and Stirling)-are occupied by T. S. and New Zealand troops. L*. S. troops arc fighting on Choiseul snri Bougainville, beyond which lies Rabaul, the eventual objective of the Allies.
