Monument To Be DedicatedMemorial Planned For Cpl. BernliartA memorial honoring Carl H. Bernhart, 173rd Airborne Dvi-sion, U. S. Army will be dedicated at Jefferson State Park Saturday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m.*Cp1. Bernhart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen 3ernhart of Richmond. was killed in ground operations in Vietnam March 16, 1968.After the dedication of the memorial, Mr. and Mrs. Bernhart will be presented posthumous awards for their son. Maj. William J. Bender, Artillery, U.S. Army, will present Mr. and Mrs. Bernhart with the Bronze Star medal and citation, the Purple Heart for wounds received in action and Good Conduct Medal for displaying honesty and efficiency.ADDITIONAL AWARDS to be presented which were made prior to Cpl Bernhart’s death include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign ribbon, Parachutists’s Badge, Rifle sharpshooter badge and the Pistol Marksman’s badge.Cpl. Bernhart was a 1966 graduate of Jefferson Union High School and served as lifeguard at Jefferson State Park for three years. He was a member of Calvary Methodist Church in Steubenville.The monument erected in Jefferson State Park honoring Cpl. Bernhart was designed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Recreation It Is made of native Ohio stone and a bronze plaque and flag pole will be placed on the monument. Itstands in a setting of evergreens and chrysanthemums.Norville Hall, assistant chief, Division of Parks and Recreation, Department of Natural Resources, will represent the State of Ohio at the dedication. The monument was made possible by gifts from friends of Cpl. Bernhart and his family. The Rev. Mr. W. Robert Raynes of the Calvary Methodist Church will officiate.THE CITATION with the Bronze Star reads as follows“For distinguishing himself by outstanding meritorious service in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam during the period 5 February, 1968 to 16 March 1968.“Through his untiring efforts and professional ability, he consistently obtained outstanding results. He was quick to grasp the implications of new problems with which he was faced as a result of the ever-changing situation inherent in a counter-insurgency operation and to find ways and means to solve those problems. The energetic appli'ation of his extensive knowledge has materially contributed to the efforts of the U.S. mission to the Republic of Vietnam to assist that country in ridding itself of the Communist threat to its freedom.“His initiative, zeal, sound judgment and devotion to duty have been in the highest tradition of the U.S. Army and reflect great credit on him and the military service.”
