The following ioem is furnished by a member of the Smethport high school rhetoric class:The Brave Defender*.By Norman Bermender.Twat a cold winter’s evening And darkness did prevail:Not a breath of air was stirring Throughout the entire vale.The old folks ’round the fireplace \We telling stories bold. jOf courageous knights and rulers Who lived in the days of old.When suddenly through the night air There rang a loud, fierce cry;“The Germans are upon us!Come quick, for we must fly!”The people started to their feet When e’er that cry was heard;They rushed through the streets ofthe village.And into the darkness they sped.There were united four score andtwentyIn the center of the town.Resolved to defend their long-lovedhomdtFrom the enemy gathered ’round.The Germans with triumphant treadCharged on that little band.But to their surprise found a wall of stone ,Made of men of a foreign clan.The fight raged heavy and hard.But it was to be for naught.And at dawn not one of the bravetendRemained from their fight, well fought.And now' in the days to followWhen peace reigns again in the hearts of men,There will be told ’round new fireplaces the storyHow those heroes died for their native land.
