Everybody took part in— and everybody means every man woman and child in Portsmouth and vicinity. They were all on hands to march in the parade or to welcome the returning heroes with hearty cheers and wann hand clasps. Altogether it was a scene such as thrilled the hearts and quickened the pulses of every one and it will be remembered as long as time lusts.The patriotic citizens did their dur.y too iu the way of decorations. Hie glorious flag of the Republic floated iu the breeze from almost every home and business house in the city while all along the line of march the residences were gay with banting and beautirul decorations of ail kinds. In many places, especially on Waller and Second streets, large hags werehung at every square.The day was a perfect one too. As when the boys left last April, nature gave them a bright and beautiful day, so today, nature agafn smiled on the returning soldiers. People wore hurrying to and fro preparing f(,r the great reception in honor of our buys. Such scenes cf activity have not been witnessed in Portsmouth since the return of the battle-scarred veterans in July, I8G5. Many who remembered these times were in the thrcngs that crowded the streets and compared the scenes then to the demonstration today. On every side appeared a sea of smiling faces, but beneath it all, permeating through the crowds, was a suppressed anguish for the boys who would conre nut. Their names, lire and character were on every mind and tears glisieued in many cvrp in sad remembrance.Promptly at the sounding of Lhc first alarm the organized bodies that ■ec | were to participate iu the parade I burned to the esplanade on Marketstreet for formation.
