Jim Land on on Monday as troops and base staff gathered at Suffield for the news. “We have delivered excellent training here in BATUS for over 40 years.”“We have invested in the base and the training area. We are very well supported by thesops willlocal community, by the province and at a national level.I am very pleased that this arrangement has been recognized as highly valuable and will be continued.”The evaluation took more than a year, with a panel of senior army officers and experts comparing training exercises undertaken at BATUS and in Germany, and examining factors such as cost, quality and risk.If Germany had been chosen it would have meant the gradual withdrawal of British troops from Suffield.It was a close call between BATUS and Germany, said Land on — who had to remain neutral throughout the process.But BATUS has an “outstandingly big training area” — he noted, offering flexibility for weapon systems, training and efficiency.As well, there is the longstanding relationship and investment here.continueWith the decision, numerous investment projects at BATUS can begin.BATUS is looking to lengthen the training exercises it runs to 35 days long, three times a year or some combination said Landon.
