NAVY DEPARTMENT WILL ASK HUGE INCREASE IN ! MEN FOR NAVY SERVICEj The local navy office Is in receipt of a communication from headquarters stating: that it is the intention of the navy department to ask congress forauthority to raise a force of 80,000 more men; 50,000 to be temporary and i 30,000 permanent, this in addition to * the 18.000 men which are still needed to complete the present navy quota. A big drive for men will be instituted in ! the near future and navy recruitingofficers hroughout the country are requested to exert every effort toward chaining men. When recruiting waselow'ed up several months ago it was because there were no facilities to provide for additional men. This condition i has now been remedied to a great ex-' tent and the department can take care i of more men than are being enlisted at present. The central division was I the fyst to fill its quota in the first ! drive in .April but recently circumstances have ied the inspector to be j convinced that there are forces at workI in his division to discourage recruitingand other activities that have to do with the successful carrying on of the war. In view of this fact any recruiting officer that considers such activities are at work in his district is requested to report immediately to the department of justice and to do his best to locate the source of the trouble.Harold R.
