DECORATION DAY.The neighing troop, the htuhitig l.lwlo.I ho bugle's stirring bl-n-t,The charge, the drciolful eannonndo,The din and shout are pant.business was generally suspended yesterday afternoon in honor of Decoration Day. There was no programme for the observance of the day, every one scorning to have waited for some else tomove in the matter. The people, Imw -over,leathered in immense throngs at thecemetery, !;wlen with Itompicts, wreaths and baskets of flowers, and proceededto decorate the graves of the fallen heroes in the customary manner. The graves in the southeastern portion of the cemetery presented a very neat appearance, being marked ly the new government headstones. Those neat marble tablets are inscribed with the name, rankcompany and regiment of the deceased,except in eases where the identity is unknown when they bear simply the inscription of “11. S. Soldier.” The headstones have been placed in position tothe number of 112 and the remainderwill soon be put in place in tlie northern section of the grounds. All tin*e•egraves were appropriately remembered those of strangers as well as of the AI tou soldiers whose remains lie in the hoim burial place. The day was beautiful,and the cpiiet “city of the dead” nev appeared a more appropriate and pealt; ful resting place for the departed, aftethe battles and hardships which j»r» ceded their entrain* within its gab'sNo profuse were tine floral offeringplaced upon the graves that the ground? before the close of the afternoon, re sembled a vast flower garden. So fa as known, none were forgotten o neglected. As usual the grave of thmartyr Lovejoy was crowned withprofusion of floral offerings.It is pleasant to record that, as Meyears go by, the interest of the pcoptin this anniversary does not wane or thi memory of the fallen grow less tender Although the days ol mourning an past the feeling of gratitude and Ion still glows and bums. All that we anas a nation, all that we enjoy of peaet and material prosperity we owe to tin devotion of the patriots of ’01. Thi. should bo the lesson of each recurrm*. anniversary: “See to it that the deat died not in vain.” It is ours to resolvi that the curse of sectional war shall never again visit our laud ;tl is ours to pri serve the unity these heroes establishet between the States and to hand down tlt;the succeeding generation the prieeles: heritage of Nationality we have our selves received.
