IN SERVICEJonathan T. SappNavy Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan T. Sapp, son of Leon H. and Mary A Sapp of Burleson, is currently halfway through a six-month overseas deployment to the Adriatic Sea and Persian Gulf serving with Strike Fighter Squadron 131 embarked aboard the aircraft carrierUSS George Washington.Sapp is one of 220 squadron members aboard the carrier who helped support the peace implementation forces in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Soon after arriving in the Adriatic Sea. Sapp and fellow Sailors hosted a meeting of top level military and government officials representing NATO and the various factions involved in the peace keeping process in the former Yugoslavia. NATO commanders selected USS George Washington to show the leaders a display of the firepower it is prepared to Use to enforce the Dayton Peace Agreement.Sapp's squadron, home based atNaval Air Station Cecil Field, Jacksonville. Fla., flies the F/A-18C Hornet, a twin-engine supersonic strike fighter capable of providing protection against enemy aircraft, delivering ordnance on targets ashore and at sea, and providing close-air support for troops on the ground.Sapp, aboard USS George Washington, traveled through the Suez Canal en route to the Persian Gulf to take over for another U.S. aircraft carrier that shifted to the Western Pacific Ocean to monitor the Chinese military exercises near Taiwan.While in the Persian Gulf, aircraft from Sapp's squadron continued to enforce the no-fly zone over southern Iraq, which has been in effect since the Persian Gulf War.So far during the voyage, Sapp and fellow shipmates had a chance to take a break from the long hours at sea and experience different cultures and locations.response option, which can be withdrawn quickly when no longerneeded.The 1990 graduate of Burleson High School of Burleson, joined the Navy in January 1993.
